The primary goal of the Children's Judo Program is to develop character through the physical practice of the Japanese Martial Arts taught in a traditional manner. Courtesy is the first lesson and self-control is the constant objective.
In the context of this program "character" is defined as:
COURTESY is respect for others and oneself. It is nurtured by treating each other as valuable and capable individuals.
COMMITMENT is the capacity to be depended upon by others. It develops as the result of fulfilling expectations.
CONFIDENCE is the ability to trust oneself. It is reinforced by the successful attainment of goals.
CONCENTRATION is the skill to remain focused both mentally and physically. It is developed by quieting the mind and increasing awareness.
Each child is a unique individual so the instructor's expectations and modifications are made based on age, ability, life experience and personal characteristics. However, each student will be expected to "reach the top of the mountain" to the best of his/her ability. The difference will be in the path taken and the pace of the climb.
A necessary and inevitable outcome of such a journey is struggle and obstacles overcome. It is this process which builds character. As in any successful development the best progress is achieved through appropriate and achievable increments of "challenge".
Everyone in the class is an equal, regardless of rank, but each is expected to be a cooperative and constructive member of the group. Competition is not stressed but is accepted as occurring in life. Students are not required to engage in any tournament activity but can do so if they wish. The student will be fully supported in this choice as long as participation is a positive factor in his/her personal development.
Parents are welcome to observe class at any time. Instructors are expected to work as a 'partner' with parents by supporting each other in the best interest of the child.
