Judo - The Gentle Way
Judo the Gentle Way!
Judo is an art, a sport, and a means of defense. Before learning to throw an opponent, or being thrown himself; the student is first taught the history, customs, and courtesies of Judo. The next lessons deal with the art of body protection (Ukemi, the art of falling without pain or injury); and the principles of balance. In addition to 40 throwing techniques, Judo includes: hold-downs, choking techniques, and armlocks... all of which can be safely used in contests of sport judo as well as self-defense.

Advanced students learn Atemi-waza... striking vital points of the body. All students (especially children) are taught the necessity of self discipline and self-control in the application of this knowledge. Even in an Emergency!

All of the Black Belt Instructors at SHODOKAN are registered with the United States Judo Federation (USJF) and/or United States Judo Association (USJA). The school is recognized by the USJF, USJA, USJI, and the New England Judo Association as well as recognized world-wide. Students are encouraged to join these associations in order to participate in local, regional, and national competitions.

The dojo facilities include mens and womens dressing rooms, adequate mat areas (main 'floating' mat upstairs with an additional adjunct mat with 'sprung floor' downstairs) for safe practice as well as a student lounge with video and television resources.
